ALPOD: A Futuristic Aluminum Pod House

A Revolution in Mobile Living

High construction costs often hinder the dream of owning property in Hong Kong. Inspired by the theme of "VISIONS 2050 - Lifestyle and the City," ALPOD, a futuristic aluminum mobile home, was designed, engineered, and produced by a team of Hong Kong visionaries. It made its debut during the Hong Kong edition of the 2015 Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism Architecture.

ALPOD stands out with its unique construction material - aluminum. This lightweight, yet strong material offers a range of advantages including corrosion resistance, fire and wind resistance, noise damping, and insulation against heat and sound. Additionally, aluminum is a sustainable and recyclable building material, making ALPOD an eco-friendly choice.

The design of ALPOD features an aerospace-type structure that creates an open space without the need for columns. Its sleek and futuristic aluminum shell gives it a distinctive profile, while the vast glazing and skylights maximize natural light. The sliding glazed windows allow for a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor environments, promoting a harmonious living experience.

Inside ALPOD, you'll find an all-aluminum interior with a fitted kitchen and bathrooms. The smart aluminum cavity wall houses the air conditioning, power source, and lighting, providing a plug-and-play experience. The open plan layout offers flexibility, allowing you to customize the space for your specific needs.

Measuring 13m in width, 3.3m in length, and 3.3m in height, ALPOD offers a generous area of 43㎡ (480 square feet). It is a versatile living solution that can serve as your primary home, suburban cottage, office, mobile shop, studio, exhibition venue, or any other purpose you can imagine.

The ALPOD project started in October 2015 in Hong Kong and was completed in December 2015 in China. It was exhibited in Kowloon Park, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong from December 11, 2015, to February 28, 2016.

The design team, led by Eric Kwong and James Law, conducted extensive research and tests to ensure the performance of the aluminum pod house. The challenges of producing the aluminum joint parts and rolled plates were overcome through precise stamping and bending technology, resulting in a stylish and futuristic design.

ALPOD has received recognition for its excellence and innovation, winning the Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2016. This award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, technical characteristics, and artistic skill, evoking positive emotions and amazement.
